Join us on March 20 to 23 as Isadora Goes Chelsea! RETURNS with immersive pop-up performances merging Duncan’s timeless dance with Chelsea’s artistic energy, featuring Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company!

Enter a world of silks and ribbons inside our Pop-up Chelsea gallery transformed to display the living art of Isadora Duncan's dance. The setting echoes the avant-garde “happenings” of mid-20th-century New York, blurring the lines between performer and audience.

Walk through the gallery in a tour led by Artistic Director Lori Belilove and view the framed artwork and archival photographs, video projections, curious and classic quotes by Isadora. Learn about Duncan's trailblazing story and her contributions to art and culture as the "mother of modern dance."

Then, the "living art" of Duncan dancers will animate the space with stunning performances of choreography by Isadora Duncan and Lori Belilove, enhanced by dramatic lighting and set to music by contemporary composers Brian Eno, Rene Aubry, John Link Vocal Project (arrangements of Chopin), and Max Richter. Live music with vocalist Amber Evans opens the program in a unique a cappella improvisational duet with Lori Belilove.

What People are Saying about the Pop-Ups:

“I’ll put it this way,” writes one audience member after seeing the shows in February, “Dance is not my favorite performance art form to watch. I attend a few, and sometimes it doesn’t reach me much or at all. This was one of the most enthralling dance performances I’ve ever seen…”

What the Press is Saying about the Pop-Ups:

Billed as an experiment, dance writer Chava Pearl Lansky remarked of the pop-up performances in the Fjord Review, “I enthusiastically applaud the company’s efforts to try something new and to make Duncan’s work more relevant—especially as it embarks on a three-year celebration of the choreographer’s 150th birthday.” She went on to say, “…as you adjust to the nuances of the vocabulary, you start to notice the so-called mother of modern dance’s ingenuity. The dancers keep a bend in their knees that gives a floating feeling to their steps and skips. Their gaze is always considered… Their arms are weightless…Duncan’s style looks particularly natural on Hayley Rose Brasher and Emily D’Angelo, both who’ve been with the company for a long time. With her delicate footwork and studied gestures, apprentice Brandy Brown also stands out.”

*Please Note* this is an immersive show, meaning it is not a traditional performance in which the audience is seated separately from the stage. Audiences will enter an art gallery setting and at times you will be invited to move through the space. There will be limited chairs throughout the space, and we ask you please prioritize those who need a moment to rest and who are pregnant, seniors and those with disabilities and conditions requiring them to sit (though those conditions may not always be visible). The space is wheelchair accessible.
