Teens & Adults

McBurney YMCA dance program expands with a partnership with Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company.

Beginning September 2016, Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company will be in residence at the McBurney YMCA in Chelsea. The residency includes an offering of classes for children and adults in the dance of Isadora Duncan, modern ballet, and studio space for Company rehearsals for upcoming performances.

Company members are all experienced dance instructors in modern dance technique of Isadora Duncan, classical ballet, yoga, pilates, and barre classes and will join the roster of instructors at the Y.

The beauty, grace, and athleticism of the Duncan technique builds strength, musicality, and freedom of movement. Within the Duncan aesthetic, children breathe through floor exercises followed by skips, runs, leaps, and tosses - all to great classical music. Includes Greek mythology, story telling, and nature imagery. Registration is now open!

Wednesday classes at McBurney YMCA occur in continuous 8-week sessions. The first fall session of 2016 begins September 7th. Most students take classes year-round! Taught by Lori Belilove.

All classes begin with a series of Duncan gestures and movements that expand upward and outward from the chest (at the point of the solar plexus) to flow through the entire body. Dance phrases from the original repertory of Isadora Duncan follow, as do studies in dramatic themes and gestures, improvisation, and basic vocabulary. At the barre, students learn Duncan leg swings, plies, and fluid body circles. The strongest focus of the class is finally on the dancing: learning to run, slide, skip, double-skip, polka, waltz, the high lift, and flying jumps and leaps that are the building blocks of the Duncan technique. Often, the classes include a creative time for improvisation.
